Glucosamine is an aminosaccharide occuring in important quantities in cartilage. It is the precursor of the disaccharide-unity of the glycosaminoglycanes (GA) of the proteases and it stimulates the production of GAG and hyaluronic acid.

Chondroïtine is one of the most important glycosaminoglycanes in the body. It consists of repeated glucuronate and N-acetylgalactosamine units. It plays a role in the proteoglycan synthesis and inhibits certain enzymes that play a role in the weakening of the cartilage.

The glucosamine HCl in Biocondil is the one used in the GAIT-trial. In comparison with glucosamine sulphate, glucosamine HCl contains more pure glucosamine. Moreover, glucosamine HCl has no added salt (NaCl or KCl), which could be responsible for side effects.
